WNCHRA Receives Prestigious SHRM Award

for Advancing the HR Profession

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently awarded the Western North Carolina Human Resources its prestigious EXCEL Gold Award for the chapters accomplishments in 2014. The award is part of the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence, which aligns individual chapters and councils with SHRM’s goals. The award recognizes accomplishments and strategic activities and initiatives that enhance the human resources profession.

“At SHRM, advancing the human resources profession is our mission. The work of our chapters and councils are central to accomplishing that,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, president and CEO of SHRM. “Receiving this award is testament to the WNCHRA Chapter's commitment to advancing the HR profession through local networking and professional development activities.”

The EXCEL award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, and each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that have to be met. WNCHRA will receive recognition in SHRM publications and conferences, a certificate of recognition, and special signage to display at its meetings and events.

2014 Announcement of the WNC HRA Scholarship Award

What a great response to our 2014 Scholarship application! We had 6 outstanding members all of who were worthy for this scholarship award.  This is by far the most applications we have received in the last 5 + years!  A tough decision for the members who served on the Scholarship subcommittee! The subcommittee members knew each of these applicants very well either through the association and/or through work.

Unfortunately, as good financial stewards, we had to keep within our initial commitment of 3 scholarship awards this year totaling $1,500.00.

As you may recall, the initial intent of the scholarship award was geared towards academic pursuits. In late September we extended the scholarship deadline and opened it up to PHR/SPHR. Out of the 6 applications received, 2 were for award consideration for their Master’s Degree and the other 4 applied for the PHR/SPHR certification.

For next year, the Board will be looking to find creative ways to fund raise for PHR/SPHR certification awards.  In addition, we will look into how we can leverage the SHRM certification award programs to benefit our members.

Benjamin Cutrufelli, Lead Employment Specialist with The Arc of North Carolina presented the award to Cindy Brooks and Evan Wise from Ingles at the November 12th WNC HRA meeting. Cutrufelli said “Ingles has set an example by hiring and developing people from the intellectually and developmentally disabled population that The Arc of North Carolina supports.” Ingles was unable to attend the state conference in Cary, NC to accept the award.
